(Free!) Kayaking on the Hudson. 72nd Street boat basin, Riverside Park, Manhattan.
Every weekend throughout the summer, you can kayak—totally for free—from 10am to 5pm, courtesy of the volunteer-run operation, Downtown Boathouse. I never went kayaking before this day, but the friendly volunteers give you a few basic instructions, tell you where you have to stay, and you’re off—it’s that easy. And, a whole lot of fun, I might add! If you’re in Manhattan and looking for something outdoorsy and somewhat off-the-beaten-path to do, this is a good place to start. Just make sure you slather on the sunblock if you burn easily—and don’t forget your legs and feet! (Can you tell what my big mistake that day was?)
Yet another reason why Manhattan is probably the greatest city on Earth.
